[cciug] BEWARE of DATES

Just to let you all in on a recent experience, we were setting up a student
lab of a dozen NT workstations for ClearCase 4.0. These were all networked
on an isolated LAN that could see each other so we figured to set them up
from a release area on one box. Each was being setup as a local server so
that we didn't have to deal with networking issues, domains etc as this was
just a temporary installation for a 1 day user training session. We had
everything that we needed, newer workstations, temporary CC license keys,
even a Rational ClearCase rep. (This was part of a Quickstart package).

Simple job right.

We installed CC no probs. Could use cleartool but when checking
clearlicense - system comes back blank. Could use some other CC functions
except could not get the labs working. Well 2 days later and multiple
combinations of installations (off cd, net work release area, client-server,
stand-alone, network options) later we finally managed to get CC up and
running for the labs.

The Problem ... the NT workstations were used for previously used for Y2K
testing and had their dates set forward each varying in weeks, months and
years. The temp CC license keys were only good for a month.. This caused
the erratic behavior. Once the dates were reset things works fine.

Turns out CC license manager couldn't handle the future. ..... Is this a
sign of things to come.. !:*)

Lesson here is check the OS system dates if you have erratic behavior on new
installs
