I assume by Static you refer to Snapshot views (as far as I know prior to version 4.0 those are only available on Windows). The essential difference is that with Snapshot views the view contents is copied over TCP/IP to the local host (client), so the client can be detached from the network. The downside is that you're back to a more "traditional" version control system, like CVS for example, where you can check out a file but it doesn't mean everyone cannot do the same while you are working on it. Therefore, when you're ready to check things in, you would have to deal with merges and such. It is a good idea to manually synchronize your view with the view server as frequently as possible. One more good thing, I believe, since snapshot views don't write/read "directly" to/from the vob/view server
 file system but rather use a proprietary TCP-based protocol, you don't need to struggle (if have at all installed) with NFS or SMB.
