Here is a plug for UNIX, from one development community
(of course every situation is different!):
Our shop up to now has used UNIX , on Sun, SGI, and HP. Only
recently have we expanded into the pc world, with NT and now with
Linux. We expect to have approximately 23 users this year. In
anticipation of future growth, our server (now running Solaris 2.6)
is a sparc, using fast-ethernet, and our storage is 17GB for vobs
and 17 GB for views. We are adding a second cpu this month.
We have always had our ClearCase vob and view storage
on a Sun, and intend to continue the same way. (We
will have client ClearCase on the NTs and on Linux.)
While our background pretty much determined the choice of UNIX,
and while Sun means bigger bucks, we have found that we have
an extremely stable development environment, and very few
server-related problems. Certainly those PCs go down one
heck of a lot more frequently than our Sun server. (And the
network environment is the same across the board) The Sun
support has always been more than adequate, whenever we
needed assistance.
