Download initialization and boot source code based on the IEEE-1275 Standard for Boot Initialization Configuration Firmware.

Who

Software engineers interested in developing boot firmware, operating system, or application code for a PowerPC®-based system.

Hardware engineers interested in fast bring-up of PowerPC-based systems, verification, and prototyping of hardware support and drivers.

What

Slimline Open Firmware (SLOF): Initialization and boot source code based on the IEEE-1275 (Open Firmware) Standard.

Why

The SLOF source code provides a largely machine-independent BIOS and illustrates what's needed to initialize and boot Linux™, a hypervisor, or any other operating system or virtualization layer on PowerPC-based machines based on the de-facto industry Open Firmware boot standard. This download is made available under a liberal Open Source Software (OSS) license. The SLOF OSS release supports the following systems:

  • JS20 blade
  • JS21 blade
  • Bimini (PPC970MP Power.org Reference Design and Workstation)
  • YDL PowerStation

The OSS SLOF download includes:

  • Documentation
  • Open Firmware for prototyping, test, and debug

Also see:

  • System-interface code to run and test SLOF on a JS20 blade, on a JS21 blade, or on Bimini (PPC970MP Power.org Reference Design and Workstation)

Changes

  • slof-JX-1.4.0-0.tar.gz (21 Sep 2007)—added support for JS21 blade and Bimini (PPC970MP Power.org Reference Design and Workstation)
  • slof-JX-1.6.0-0.tar.gz (29 Feb 2008)—added support for XGI XP10 graphics card on Bimini (PPC970MP Power.org Reference Design and Workstation)
  • slof-JX-1.7.0-1.tar.gz (23 Jun 2008)—improved support for Bimini (PPC970MP Power.org Reference Design and Workstation)
  • slof-JX-1.7.0-4.tar.gz (01 Dec 2008)—added support for YDL PowerStation and made other important fixes

Where

Only at the IBM developerWorks Power Architecture technology zone

When

The OSS Slimline Open Firmware updated download slof-JX-1.7.0-4.tar.gz is available immediately. Download it from the link above. (The previous downloads are also still available.)

How

The download is available in .tar.gz format; free, simplified registration is required.
