Hakan Erdogmus, editor-in-chief of IEEE Software Magazine, talks about the
mandate of the magazine, how it differs from other software publications,
and why it is valuable for today's software engineer. He talks
about how the content and the audience have evolved, and touches on some
trends he sees in regard to essential skills for software engineers.

About the guest  Hakan Erdogmus is a senior research officer at the National Research
Council in Ottawa, Canada. He joined NRC's Institute for Information
Technology in 1995, and since then has been a member of the Software
Engineering Group. He's also an adjunct professor in the University of
Calgary's computer science department, where he teaches graduate courses.
His current research interests center on software economics, process
measurement, and the evaluation of software development practices. He has
previously worked on formal verification of concurrent programs and
architectural formalisms. He coedited "Advances in Software Engineering and
Value-Based Software Engineering," both published by Springer. He is the
2003 recipient of the Eugene L. Grant Award in Engineering Economy from the
American Society for Engineering Education. He obtained his doctorate in
telecommunications engineering from Université du Québec's Institut
national de la recherche scientifique. He holds a master's degree in
computer science from McGill University and a bachelor's degree in computer
engineering from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. He is a member of the IEEE
Computer Society and the ACM.
