In Part 1, John Kellerman talks about the origins of Eclipse and discusses why Eclipse and open source in general are such a practical move for IBM®. He also shares examples of companies innovating with Eclipse, including NASA's use with the Mars Spirit and Discovery rovers. In Part 2, he continues with more examples of companies innovating with Eclipse, then shares thoughts about the growth of the Eclipse community and looks into the future of Eclipse. Kellerman joined IBM in 1984 with a computer science degree from Purdue University. He since completed graduate degrees in computer engineering at North Carolina State and business administration at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has spent the majority of his years at IBM in the development and management of application development tool products, including ISPF/PDF, VisualAge Smalltalk, VisualAge Generator, and Eclipse. A founding member of the Eclipse project, he is currently manager, Eclipse Strategy, IBM. His responsibilities include working closely on behalf of IBM with Eclipse.org, the nonprofit Eclipse Foundation, and the member companies to help grow the Eclipse community of contributors and commercial offerings inside and outside IBM.
