Guidelines

The last step in designing your e-business application is to review the guidelines for how to design, develop, deploy, and manage e-business applications. The guidelines help you customize the solution design, maximize performance, and select platforms on which to deliver the solution.

Some general guidelines that apply for the designs of all solutions are:

These guidelines are intended primarily for IT architects and IT specialists but will be of use to anyone designing an e-business application.

Performance guidelines

More About High Volume Web Sites, SG24-6562, is a compilation of IBM's High-Volume Web Sites (HVWS) team papers that address the unique challenges in design, implementation, and management that high-volume IT infrastructures present. (The earlier book, Best Practices for High-Volume Web Sites, is also available. Select the "Additional Materials" link from the menu on the upper right of the same page.)

Designing e-business Solutions for Performance (ZIP, 1043KB) describes how the design or implementation of an e-business application can affect performance.

Recommended technology options

Chapter 4 of IBM WebSphere V5 Edge of Network Patterns, SG24-6896, introduces WebSphere Edge Server, introduces WebSphere Application Server Edge Components, its main subcomponents that may be used to address security requirements in a Runtime pattern, and considerations to keep in mind when evaluating the benefits of each.

Chapter 4 of Patterns for the Edge of Network, SG24-6822, introduces WebSphere Edge Server, its main components that may be used to address high availability and high performance requirements in a Runtime pattern, and considerations to keep in mind when evaluating the benefits of each.

Security Guidelines

Chapter 6 of IBM WebSphere V5 Edge of Network Patterns, SG24-6896, describes in detail a sample scenario for deploying and working with the Tivoli Access Manager Plug-in for Edge Server for authentication and authorization.

Chapter 5 of Patterns for the Edge of Network, SG24-6822, presents a brief overview of cryptography and security considerations, followed by a Runtime pattern to offload authentication and authorization processing from application server nodes.
