In the search for more portable and lightweight enterprise solutions, Java™ 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) developers can leverage both Stripes and Apache Derby for rapid, lightweight, J2EE development. Learn how to develop, package, and deploy a simple Stripes application that performs Create, Retrieve, Update, and Delete (CRUD) operations on a Derby database.

Objectives

  • Learn how to build a simple Stripes application from the ground up.

  • Become familiar with the Stripes framework, the Apache Derby database, and the tools that support the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE).

  • Practice on and futher tailor the included fully functional example application to help you get started with a Stripes and Derby application.

Prerequisites

Previous experience with Java technology and Web development is helpful.


System requirements

To follow the examples in this tutorial, you must install the following software:

  • Java software development kit (JDK) V1.5 or later
  • Apache Tomcat 5.5.15 or later
  • Stripes 1.3.2
  • Apache Derby 10.1.2.1
  • Eclipse 3.1 or later

    Note: The all-in-one installation with WebTools is recommended. I used Callisto for this tutorial.

  • Apache Ant 1.6.5
