Power Architecture Community Newsletter

15 July 2005

developerWorks

Greetings, Power Architecture readers,

Lots of good news in this newsletter: 11 more companies just joined Power.org, and one of newest entries in the PowerPC® realm is Freescale's MPC7448, a low-power embedded chip built with the 90nm SOI (silicon-on-insulator) CMOS process that Microprocessor Report's senior analyst Tom Halfhill says follows a tradition of "steadily increasing the performance [of PowerPC-based embedded processors] while effectively managing power consumption." The e600 PowerPC core should clock from 600MHz to 1.7GHz on less than 10 Watts and should be available in October 2005. The same family of processors, the MPC74xx, is in the G4 Apple Macintoshes.

Speaking of new processors, in the Power Calendar this issue, meet the newest members of the Power Architecture family, the 970MP and the low-power 970FX. Plus, find some new ideas on the obstacles involved in making chips smaller and a roundup of fresh news on the Cell processor and some news of the future. And we make note of upcoming workshops and conferences that should be of interest to you.

This issue's Power Resources include some solutions from TimeSys to let you customize Linux™ to make it as unique as the device it runs on. Plus, you'll find more on the Slimline Open Firmware and updates on PIBS, as well as a library of new or improved documents and a few IBM Residencies (so you can put your name on a piece of history by helping to create those Redbooks™).

Also in this issue, the gang at the PowerPC Applications Engineering Team offers a solution to problems with non-integer core-to-bus frequency ratios in some 750GXs. And hear a few parting thoughts from Chartered's Walter Ng.

Thanks,
Kane Scarlett

P.S. Don't forget to subscribe to the Power Architecture Community Newsletter to receive the latest issues in your inbox.

PowerPC processor tips: 750GX half-mode good parts
A new set of PowerPC 750GX dd1.2 part numbers now allows operation with the processor to system clock multiplier set to non-integer (for example, 1GHz/133MHz = 7.5x), as well as integer (for example 1GHz/200MHz = 5x) ratios.
