Greetings, Power Architecture readers,
I've had one whole newsletter cycle (plus a little bit) to think about
Apple's decision to move away from PowerPC®, and it did leave me feeling bit
sentimental (and maybe even sappy) at first to think that yet another
chapter in the book of ... er, microprocessors -- has come to a close. But
then LinuxDevices kindly reminded me that the world is 98% embedded, and
only 2% desktop (they were kind enough at the same time to report on their
reader survey showing that Power Architecture technology is the fastest-growing processor architecture in
the embedded market).
And I've hardly had any time at all to wax nostalgic since, because the
changes didn't stop there: the Power Architecture ecosystem is growing
and changing at an astonishing rate: Blue Gene®/L doubled its own speed
record (again) and ranked No. 1 on the Top500 (again), Power.org accepted 11
new members (welcome!), the Cell processor is moving closer and closer to
delivery: these and other changes in the landscape are chronicled in the
Power Calendar.
Thankfully, some things do stay the same in this midst of this whirlwind
of action: Power Resources is still the place that will tip you off
to the latest Power-related Redbook™ Residencies (where you can spend a few
weeks studying real IBMers in their natural habitat); and the place where you'll find all the newest downloads and documentation from the greater IBM site.
And speaking of IBMers in their natural habitat -- the gang at the PowerPC
Applications Engineering Team never disappoints: The PowerPC processor tip
this time features JTAG debugger advice for your
970 Evaluation Board.
Thanks,
Kane Scarlett

Chartered and IBM: Building a common platform for manufacturing
Chartered has come a long way in the last six years, to the point that some
50% of its revenue comes from leading-edge technology -- like the
Common Design Platform it has developed with IBM. As the gap widens
between the geometries the market leaders are pursuing, and those that
more conservative companies stick to, we see Chartered in the catbird seat --
able to support both mature and bleeding-edge processes across their
entire life cycle.

Downloads and documentation
Beyond the SNA architecture PU Type 4, beyond APPN, even beyond IP
routing, the IBM 3745 Communication Controller and the 3746 Nways
Multiprotocol Controller support an extraordinary set of
functions and protocols -- discover their fate. Also find two downloads, one tutorial, a plethora of Redbooks and other IBM documentation, and a chance to
encounter IBMers in their natural habitat. |
