Volume management with LVM

DASD I/O rates can be improved by defining logical volumes in Linux with the Logical Volume Manager (LVM). Tests with sequential I/O showed acceptable scaling for DASD striping for block read:

Observation

SCALING
2 disks
4 disks
8 disks
ESCON:
2x
3x
6x
FICON Express

5x

Changing connectivity from ESCON to FICON Express improves performance by 50% to 100%.

Test environment
  • IBM eServer zSeries 900 (2064-116)
  • IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server 2105-F20
  • Linux 31bit, kernel 2.4.17
  • LPAR with 2 CPUs and 128MB memory
  • Benchmark Bonnie 2.0, block write and block read, file size 512MB
  • Stripe size 64KB
  • File system ext2
