Disk setup
  • For larger databases and transactional database workloads, put the database files and the database log files on Logical Volumes (using LVM or EVMS). When setting up a Logical Volume the number of stripes is important. The number of stripes must be equal to the number of disks comprising the Logical Volume. The LVM only uses disks up to the number of available stripes.
For more information see Volume management.

  • If the storage server is an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS), then distribute the disks for Logical Volumes over several raid arrays and clusters to achieve best performance. Don't organize them in only one raid array!
For more information see Disk performance optimizing.

It is also possible to change the ESS subsystem operating mode (used caching algorithm) for the ECKD disk devices.
For more information see ESS subsystem operating modes.
