On 13 October 2004, IBM announced new products and major enhancements to the core solutions from Rational software in the IBM Software Development Platform. The following articles highlight further major enhancements to the core Rational software solutions, announced during the month of December 2004.

These solutions, code-named "Atlantic," help unify development team members on the open Eclipse framework and more tightly link business, development, and operations organizations.The solutions from Rational, including new products for architects, developers, testers, and project managers, help unify software development teams on the open Eclipse framework and more tightly link business, development, and operations functions within an organization. Because Rational's new offerings are based on Eclipse, a single, open platform, every member of the software development team can now more effectively share information throughout the development process, improving the productivity, quality, and predictability of software development.

Evaluation versions are now planned for availability on 1/7/2005. They will be available for customers to download from the IBM Customer Support Trials and Betas site. Note: Evaluation versions of Atlantic products are built to expire 30 or 60 days after you install the product. There are no evaluation license keys to install or manage for the initial evaluation period.

• Migrating from Rational Rose to Rational Software Modeler or Rational Software Architect: The included download contains a set of documents that will help provide the user with a roadmap for migrating from Rational Rose to Rational Software Modeler (RSM) or Rational Software Architect (RSA). In addition to outlining the steps required for migrating Rose artifacts to RSM/RSA, it also provides pointers to more detailed information on specific topics.
  
  
• Coarse-grained service pattern with SDOs and EJB Session Facades in Rational Application Developer (Part 1): This article is the first of a multipart series that introduces a new feature in Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software, which automates the generation of the Value Object and Session Facade patterns for EJB development. The generated code uses Service Data Objects (SDOs) as the Value Objects for data transfer, thus enabling coarse-grained services and the use of standards-based programming. The article gives you an overview of how to use the feature to generate code, and how to write a client application using the programming model.
