LogKit is an easy-to-use lightweight logging toolkit designed for secure performance-oriented logging in Java server applications. LogKit offers a dual benefit: During development, it provides the programmer with crucial debugging information; once deployed, it provides administrators with operational data that helps them diagnose problems as they come up.

By design, LogKit does not specify any configuration format, but instead encourages users to integrate it into their existing products. The third beta of the 1.0 release became available in July 2001. Even though it's now in beta, LogKit's reliability and stability have been demonstrated in a number of environments over the several years. The current version requires JDK 1.2 or above.

LogKit is one of the fruits of the Jakarta Project's Avalon subproject -- an effort to create, design, develop and maintain a common framework and set of components for applications written in Java. This framework is not a stand-alone product: It allows existing and future applications to fit into a common platform and share code, design, and human resources. The Jakarta Project's software, including LogKit, is freely available, licensed under the open-source Apache Software License.

For more information, see the LogKit Developer Documentation.
