Simplification of the information technology (IT) environment is necessary for technology to act as a catalyst and an enabler of an agile and responsive business. IBM has defined a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to bring such simplification to IT. The IBM On Demand Operating Environment is a visionary architecture that combines concepts from different domains, including business performance management, service-oriented architecture (SOA), Web services, autonomic computing, and grid computing. The resulting open standards-based architecture supports faster integration, automated management of the IT, and ubiquitous access to computing power where and when needed through virtualization.

The articles in this series demonstrate to business analysts, solution designers, and architects how to design and implement on demand solutions using the thirteen capabilities of the IBM On Demand Operating Environment. These capabilities -- including business modeling, application and information integration, policy-based orchestration, resource virtualization, and others -- bring integration and infrastructure management to IT solutions in an On Demand Business.

Before reading this series, get an overview of the On Demand Operating Environment with the developerWorks article, "The On Demand Operating Environment: Architectural overview." Also read "Boost flexibility and simplify IT" to learn how you can use the capabilities of the On Demand Operating Environment to turn your enterprise into an On Demand Business.
