RD/z V7.6 CD Shipment and Invalid Disks

I started to install V7.6 yesterday. When IM got to wanting Disk1 of the Websphere CDs, it gave me an error message saying that it expected a certain disk but that it didn't get the correct disk inserted. When I checked the "input.xml" file on the Disk1 set shipped by IBM, the disk title was nothing like the "expected" title.

From checking this with our IBM rep Mitch Funsten, it appears that the CDs shipped for Websphere (or maybe some inventory list on a different disk) is NOT correct.

Mitch is shipping me replacement CD(s) to fix this problem.

Below is an extract that explains this issue further.

1:37:09 PM Mitchell D. Funsten - Hi John - Has anyone verified the RAD CDs being shipped with RDz 7.6 Passport Advantage Media pack? Kevin Evans from the FBI is getting and invalid media error message when inserting RAD Disk 1.
1:38:44 PM John W. Snyder - Hi Mitch... the RAD disks are good. Turns out that RAD shipped 7.5.3 IFIx001 when we had expected them to ship 7.5.3. We just updated our setup disks to work correctly with the RAD disks that are available. The new setup disk is available today on PPA.
1:40:17 PM John W. Snyder - Their other option is to install RAD separately by starting IM and pointing to the RAD disk1\disktag.inf file.
1:40:40 PM Mitchell D. Funsten - where can I download a wroking copy of RAD for RDz 7.6
1:40:57 PM John W. Snyder - you need to get the updated RDz setup disk.
1:41:07 PM John W. Snyder - You can get from PPA/XL download
1:43:11 PM Mitchell D. Funsten - OK - Just to reconfirm, If I download just the RDz Setup disk. That will resolve the problem when Kevin install RDz on another work station?
1:43:18 PM John W. Snyder - yes
1:44:10 PM Mitchell D. Funsten - Ok thanks - is ther something I can look on the RDz Setup disk to verify I downloaded the latest and greatest
1:44:31 PM John W. Snyder - There will not be a PEK directory on it.
1:44:53 PM John W. Snyder - I've got to run to another appt... Matthew McGuigan can answer any other questions you have.
1:45:04 PM Mitchell D. Funsten - OK

The problem here was (at least initially) that the manifest on the setup disk did NOT match the disks provided.

Our support rep sent us a replacement SETUP CD (after consultation with the IBM distribution folks). This also didn't work.

IBM are still investigating this. I have requested a replacement of the SETUP disk (like the original SETUP only fixed). The first replacement disk was NOT that.

More later........

Hi Kevin,

Nothing to add, but I want to say I feel terrible about your experience having to get through all these troubles just to get the right set of disks. Hopefully this will be resolved very soon.

Well, here we are on November 23rd and still no 2nd replacement setup disk. I'm still waiting on a reply from IBM as to shipping a "corrected" setup disk with the right manifest on it.

I hope that these posts help other people who might find themselves in the same position.

The originally shipped disks from IBM (when we ordered RD/z V7.6) were delivered with an incorrect manifest on the shipped disks, so the product would not install. IBM shipped us a “replacement” disk that was not a correct match for the disk that they were replacing. So, now IBM have shipped a 3 disk “set” to replace 3 of the disks from the original set. I have not received those CDs yet. V7.6 will not be installed until I have those 3 CDs.

In retrospect, maybe ordering V7.6 on the date that it went GA was NOT a good idea. I'm told that on the next release that IBM are seriously considering a shipment option on DVDs (vs CDs). Not before time! <g>.

More later after I receive the updated disks.

I have just been advised by our IBM tech. rep that he is overnighting 3 DVDs to us. These will replace many more CDs in the originally shipped CD set from IBM.

DVD1 - will replace RD/z Setup, CD1, CD2 and license keys
DVD2 - will replace Rational Application Developer (RAD) CDs 1 through 6
DVD3 - will replace Websphere Application Server (WAS) CDs 1 through 4

He will also ship a Powerpoint presentation of the installation that he did using these disks.

Again, I am told that IBM will have, as an option, for the next release a selection of getting the media on DVD or CD.

Regards,

Kevin
