MS SQL Authentication - Must be Mixed Mode

There appears to be no method by which a connection can be made to a MS SQL instance that is configured for Windows Authentication only.
Can you please confirm.

That is correct. You must pass a user id and password for authentication.

So, to further clarify ... that user ID cannot be a Windows domain user. Is that correct ?

Yes, you must select "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode".
