We need to PUSH a "status change notification" from the Server (JavaEE code running on WAS V6.1) to the client (Opera Mobile V8.x Browser on a Cell phone). We decided to use the new Web messaging Service of Web 2.0 Feature pack that uses Ajax/Dojo Cometd and Bayeux protocol. We created a quick Mobile Friendly prototype and we have tested it successfully on Firefox and IE and Safari and even Opera on PC, Mac, Linux etc.
But it did not work on Opera Mobile browser (not Opera "Mini"). Now we know Opera Mobile does support typical AJAX XHR (XmlHttpRequest) calls which are typical PULL requests from the client (browser) to the Server side JavaEE code.
Can someone please comment further on this.
1. Do we know for sure that Web Messaging Service does not work on Opera Mobile? Do we know the reason? Is there any plan on IBM or Opera side to fix it to make it working on Opera Mobile?
2. If this option is out, what other approach can we use to PUSH a status update from the Server side to the client on the Mobile devices that use Opera Mobile as the browser? We could do use typical AJAX/Dojo.rawXHR calls and poll them every "n" seconds but that is not great from the performance perspective and also means it introduces limitation of maximum delay of "n" seconds of "status notification" on the client (Opera Mobile on the Cell phone) which may not be acceptable business decision. Any other design approaches?
