My company is looking to buy the software for rational system architect. I am trying to find out the best way to train personnel on the rational system architect (meaning: the most learning with the least amount of time and money spent on learning). Any suggestions?

There are a lot of variables.
1. Location
2. Are you using an off the shelf method such as DoDAF or MoDAF
3. Will you be doing much tailoring
4. Will you be using VBA
5. and lots that I haven't thought of.

Most of us will have installed SA under Popkin or Telelogic rather than IBM so what is on offer may differ from our experience.

For our (UK) site with an implementation that was always going to be heavily tailored we had Popkin consultants provide in house training for the core team who set up and tailored the product and then we created our own tightly focussed in house training for end users.

We will be purchasing SA through IBM, so whatever differences that entails we'll have to find out. We will be doing some tailoring, and using the DODAF add on. We reside in Sierra Vista, Arizona. How long did training your core team and your end users take? We are under time constraints, and the clock is ticking. Thank you for suggestions and helpful hints. We don't know what we don't know, so I'll have to get back to you on VBA.

Dennis

our core team were all highly experienced CASE tool users and administrators. IT took about 4 days to train the basics and of course a few months until we were seriously up to speed. Easy enough in the UK as the Popkin offices and our offices were within commuting distance. VBA was covered later by a separate 3 day session.

I reckon on training a user in SA basics and the use of one modelling technique in around 90 minutes. Obviously users are expected to know the underlying modelling technique first, training people in BPMN or UML isn't part of the tool training, I only train them in how to use SA to apply the techniques.

I suggest you contact your Rational Technical specialist for specific guidance - they can provide you with the best possible options. If you need more help, go to this link and look under the SA section for the role based trng paths:
