INN0V8: Classroom logistics: Best Practices & Lessons Learned

Hi, Let's get a discussion going to share information and ideas on how to get the most value out of INN0V8 in an instructional setting. It's important to do some advance thinking and planning about where & how the students will play the game. Time spent planning up front will minimize any hassles and allow for the most productive instructional experience.
-First, read and understand the technical pre-requisites. It's important, especially if you are new to gaming.
-If the students are to play the game from their own laptop...
-Will a majority of those laptops have been built to a configuration specified by the school?
-If yes, how can you get access to a machine of that type to do a test install?
-If no, consider the possible impacts if a student's computer is not sufficient to run the game. Is the 'buddy system' an acceptble alternative for your teaching plan? Are spare machines available?
-If the students are to play the game from a machine in a computer lab...
-Do a test install to make sure the game runs properly on the target machine
-Validate that each machine in the lab has the same configuration, or test on each configuration.
-How will the game get installed on each machine? Will the students do it, or will your I.T. support do the install?
-If the students are to do the installs, you will need to either find a location on your network to host the file (approx 180mb), or create installation media
-If you host the file on your network, and the students are to do the install, will you let them do the installs in advance of the class? Any implications if they play the game in advance?
-What are your ideas or experiences? What worked & what didn't?

An external contact from Kiev has asked:
"I have some questions according your game Innov8. I've passed it. It's very good and informative.
Not long ago I've joined Academic Initiative. I've shown this game to my University management. They like it to. But if we are going to put it in educational proccess there should be some control-list with an information about the results confirming that the student has passed the game. It is necessary to check, control and assess students.
I would like to know of there is such a possibility. Thank you for help and assistance. Looking
forward for your reply."
Can you provide any information on such capability? Thank you.

Hi! I like this thread.
I'm working with my local university to create a module where Innov8 could be very valuable. I'd like to understand what material is available to position Innov8, to lead into using it, and to wrap up the work after "playing". Can someone point me to that, or does anyone have anything that's proven to do this?
Many thanks

This is the homepage of innov8:
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/solutions/soa/innov8.html
If you are eligible, you can register for the Academic Initiative - make sure, you have an MyIBM account, which is for free actually. Only Academix Initiative members can download the software. The Download is available on this homepage too.

Hi
I have played the game with my class who are studying BPM. They all submitted their scores. Does anyone know how the game is scored. I need to give the class some marks for their workshop and hoped to use their scores. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Lisa Seymour - University of Cape Town.

THere is an instructor's manual that is currently packaged with the full version of the game upon download through the Academic initiative or the INNOV8 Customer Ambassador program. This guide has tips on best practices as well as lessons learned.
Regarding scoring, we will be lowering the 'win threshhold' for the full game to 13,000 as not enough students were passing the high 14,500 mark.

Right now to win in the full game you need to make 14,500 or better... We are lowering this to 13,000 in the next game update due out soon.

Best Practices:
Have the students play in teams of 4 with ONE driver.
Have the students discuss the game after playing it as a class.
Have the students play the online Smart Traffic and Supply chain games as homework.
Ensure before the students play that you walk them through moving through the game:
- Floating map on lower left shows you where you are in reference to objects you need to find.
- GOALS tool shows you what you need to do next
- Dont go upstairs if you are trying to find objects
- Take notes during Level one on ALL objects found.
- On sim level, click on blue question marks for more information

Hi everyone,I am teacher. I found a website with classroom management tricks and I follow that. The interest, abilities, and time constraints of your students have to be considered. My students finish their assignments on time and ask for some more. Log on to www.classroom-management.org for additional information.
