I'm trying to configure an Etherchannel between 2 IBM,9131-52As directly attached with Ethernet cross-over cables and NO SWITCH. For a test I'm just using 2 ports on the same "2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX PCI-X Adapter (14108902)".

Should it work? I get this right after configuring the 2nd box ...
ent6 TOTAL ETHERCHANNEL FAILURE
ent5 ETHERNET NETWORK RECOVERY MODE
ent5 ETHERNET NETWORK RECOVERY MODE
ent4 ETHERNET DOWN
ent4 ETHERNET DOWN

Just to be clear, I've pinged over these interfaces then cleaned up so that they are not configured before starting the Etherchannel configuration. I've also tried with "8023ad" mode with the same result.

Etherchannel without a switch!

How can you do that?

Do you have an etherchannel aware crossover cable?

I'd be very interested to know the connection details / pin out of a cable with two rj45 connectors at each end that could support etherchannel!

If you can get it to work it should be worth a fortune!

What is your adapter configuration and are the same errors posted on both machines, or have you connected the two etherchannel adapters on the same system to each other with the crossover cable? in which case it is probably not worth the fortune mentioned above....

Just 2 ethernet cross-over cables between 2 boxes. Simple. This IBM techdoc (although related to HACMP) indicates that it is possible: http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/TD101785

OK, cannot be bothered to read your techdoc.

You could not be bothered to post the adapter config or where the errors came from, so here goes for a shot in the dark....

The errors you posted are in reverse order.

ent4 is primary, ent5 is backup, ent6 is the etherchannel and these errors are on the first box.

You have unplugged the ent4 cable or have a bad connection - it is not communicating - so ent4 goes down, probably entstat shoes link down. the etherchannel fais to ent5, the bakup, this also has a connection problem, it fails also, therefore the channel is down, neither adapter can connect.

Now, it you tell us the adapter configuration, the order of the errors and what is posted on bith machines then we might be able to assist further.

NIB over two crossover cables, between two machines, if configured correctly, should work fine.
