I have come across custom build which creates the home filesystem on /lhome (/dev/hd1) instead of /home .

Any specific hard requirement for a /home is worked around with a symlink.

Any guess what could be reason for having such practice ?

Perhapps it's for local system users with the goal of having system users on /home, mounted from a file server? Perhapps the original /home file system was just moved out of the way (renamed the mountpoint) in order to use /home mount point for a larger disk array or something else? I guess there can be lots of reasons.

Anyway, just a though.
