In today's information-driven business world, it is very common for database administrators and application developers to face challenges such as accessing and integrating information from disparate and distributed sources and consolidating it into a single unified view. In most cases, business requirements such as real time access to dynamic information leads database administrators or application developers to take advantage of federation solutions such as IBM® WebSphere® Federation Server.

The Federation Configuration Wizard complements the IBM WebSphere Federation Server product to give database administrators an easy-to-use, stand-alone tool to discover and configure database objects across distributed and diverse data sources. In this tutorial, follow a simple scenario to see how the Federation Configuration Wizard can be used to access and retrieve disparate data, and build a unified view across heterogeneous data sources.

Objectives

In this tutorial, you will learn the basic concepts of federation and how to configure your federated system to access a set of relational data sources using the Federation Configuration Wizard.

Prerequisites

This tutorial is written using DB2 and Oracle relational database management systems. You should have general familiarity with relational databases and WebSphere Federation Server concepts, including federated server, wrapper, server definition, user mapping, and nicknames, which are further explained in the tutorial.

System requirements

This tutorial is created on the GA version of WebSphere Federated Server V9.1 or later and Oracle 10g client. The tutorial is written from the viewpoint of a new installation of WebSphere Federated Server V9.1 or later and Oracle 10g client. However, any of the following relational data sources are supported by Federation Configuration Wizard and can be used instead: DB2 Universal Database™ (DB2 UDB), DB2 UDB iSeries™, DB2 UDB zSeries®, Oracle, Sybase, Informix®, Microsoft® SQL Server, ODBC, and Teradata. This wizard is currently only available on Windows® platforms.
