02 Mar 2004 IBM has put immense effort into the drive toward autonomic computing systems -- that is, systems that are self-optimizing, self-healing, self-protecting, and self-configuring. This tutorial looks at the fundamental issue of problem determination and what it takes to transform this from a human process to an autonomic one. The tutorial describes the state of problem determination today, looks at what logging options exist, and shows how events can be recognized as part of larger situations. It also describes the Common Base Events and provides an autonomic computing example.
