Note: When you start any of the online trials in the SOA Sandbox, you will have four hours to explore the products and exercises within the Sandbox. If you exit one entry point and begin another, you have whatever time remains of the original four hours to explore successive trials. To continue working beyond the end of a four-hour session, save your materials and register to begin the trial again. You will need to refresh your desktop and other settings when the trial reopens to continue where you left off.

People online trial

In this exercise, you will create a simple web-based user interface that uses an existing external service published in the REST style, returning data in the Atom format.  For starters, you build the user interface using WebSphere Portlet Factory® Designer installed in Rational Software Architect®. Then you test it by deploying it first as a J2EE web user interface in WebSphere Application Server Community Edition® and then as a Java™ standard portlet in WebSphere Portal Server®. The objective of this trial is to demonstrate how user interfaces can be created to adapt to changing requirements.

When your trial session begins, Rational Software Architect will open up a workspace including WebSphere Portlet Factory Designer. On the right-hand side of your workspace, an Eclipse™ Cheatsheet™ contains the instructions for a short exercise: Creating a portlet to access a REST service. A more detailed version of these instructions is available in the SOA Sandbox information center.

Managing Local Carbon Footprint

Using IBM WebSphere sMash, you develop, test and run an iWidget for tracking energy usage . The simple Web 2.0 application you create prompts the end-user with a series of questions regarding usage patterns and records the answers for later retrieval. Then you integrate it with another application via IBM Mashup Center to assemble a solution that allows the applications to share information in order to provide suitable recommendations regarding power consumption and conservation options.

Preparing for your online trial

The online trial experience allows you to try software products without having to install them on your own system. This is product-level code, with all features and options enabled.

Step 1: Review the online trial prerequisites
Step 2: Review these helpful evaluation resources

Online trial prerequisites

Client software
The online trial program uses the Citrix XenApp Presentation Server (formerly known as the MetaFrame Presentation Server) to provide you a connection from your workstation to the remote server running the IBM product you are evaluating. You will need to download the latest XenApp Web plugin appropriate for your operating system.

If you are installing Citrix for the first time, you will see a popup window that asks for the address of the server hosting your published application. Leave the Server Address field blank and click Next.

If you do not have the Citrix Web plugin installed when you attempt to access the online trial, you will be prompted to install it.

If you're having trouble installing the plugin, see the Citrix installation instructions.

Supported browsers
Microsoft Internet Explorer V6 or later and Mozilla Firefox V1.5 or later are supported.

Connection speed
We recommend that you use a high-speed connection while evaluating software online. Because the session you will be using is running remotely over the Internet with unpredictable delays and latencies, you should not use your experience with the session as a guide to the performance of the tools when installed in a local environment.

Connectivity FAQs
