IBM® Rational® Developer for System z™ gives System z developers tools for traditional mainframe development and for integrated, mixed workloads. An interactive, workstation-based environment lets you connect to a mainframe and develop mainframe-based applications in COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, C/C++, and Java code, as well as workstation-based applications in COBOL, PL/I, and Java code.
Note: Rational Developer for System z with EGL and Rational Developer for System z with Java are no longer marketed; the functions in each have been assumed by Rational Developer for System z and Rational Developer for zEnterprise, respectively.

Rational Developer for
System z is a workstation product with z/OS server elements. To effectively
try out the product, you need access to both the z/OS server and the
workstation components.
- Existing users of Rational Developer for System z V8.0.1 or later: If you have access to the z/OS server components, install just the workstation component using Installation Manager (faster) or HTTP|Download Director.
- New users: First download and install the z/OS server component. Then download the workstation component using either Installation Manager (faster) or HTTP|Download Director.
You can also try Rational Developer for System z as part of the Enterprise Modernization Sandbox for System z.
