This sandbox for architecture modernization provides hands-on walkthroughs of common real-world scenarios, including extending IBM i™ 5250 applications to modern user interfaces, Web services and deployment of traditional RPG and new Java workloads on IBM i. The scenarios provide examples of how to rapidly design, create, assemble, test, and deploy high-quality Web, Web services, portal, and SOA applications for IBM i and IBM WebSphere® Application Server. By working with what you already have, you can reduce time to market, improve business alignment for growth, cut cost, and limit business risk.
This sandbox is intended for analysts, architects, and developers who have existing RPG and COBOL skills and who want to extend those skills to deploy new workloads on the IBM i environment (the IBM Power Systems platform, including IBM i, AS/400, iSeries, and System i), leveraging modern architectures and technologies. It can also be of use to others who wish to gain an appreciation of how to work in an IBM i environment and the options available for developing next-generation IBM i applications.
IBM products available for evaluation online in this sandbox include:
IBM Rational® Developer for System i
IBM Rational Developer for System i for SOA Construction
Rational Host Access Transformation Services for Multiplatforms (HATS)
Hands-on exercises available online in this sandbox include:
Explore local System i application development with IBM Rational Developer for System i: In less than an hour, learn how to leverage the new Eclipse-based IBM i development environment to edit, compile, and debug an ILE RPG application locally -- so you can work on your code without being connected to the server. Then, deploy your code to a remote IBM i server.
Transform 5250 green screens into Web apps: In about an hour, learn how to take an existing IBM System i 5250 application and transform it into a customized Web app, using Rational Host Access Transformation Services (HATS).
Add Web services to a HATS project: After you learn how to create a customized Web app, take an hour to see how Rational Host Access Transformation Services (HATS) makes it easy to expose that app as a Web service.
Coming soon: Build a Web service from an RPG program using i5/OS Web services tools in Rational Developer for System i for SOA Construction
Coming soon: Create SQL-based Web services to access System i data with Rational Developer for System i for SOA Construction
Coming soon: Consume Services Data Objects in a browser-based JavaServer™ Faces Web application using Rational Developer for System i for SOA Construction
No formal support is available for the sandbox. However, you can browse the how-to resources, including tutorials, articles, demos, production documentation, webcasts, forums, a searchable knowledge database, and more.
