Informix application development and testing on the cloud

Using IBM Informix Dynamic Server and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)

Yunming Wang (yunming@us.ibm.com), Advanced Support Engineer, IBM
Yunming Wang works at IBM as an advanced support engineer on the Informix Advanced Problem Diagnostics (APD) team. He has been working at Informix and IBM since 1998, focusing on Informix and DB2 programming APIs and database connectivity. Areas of specialization include ODBC, JDBC, OLEDB/.Net, ESQL/C, and TCP/IP. Most recently, he has been involved with an IDS virtual appliance project that deals with virtualization and cloud computing technology. Before he joined Informix, he was a software developer. He received his Master degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Arkansas in 1995.

Summary:  IBM® Informix® Dynamic Server (IDS) is database server software targeted at high-volume online transaction processing (OLTP). IDS is ideal for managing large deployments and embedded solutions. This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions for using IDS in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for your database application development.

About this tutorial

Using IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is simple and easy. This tutorial will help you get started with Amazon EC2 running IBM IDS 11.5 by providing step-by-step instructions. You can use any of the following ways to launch an IDS Amazon Machine Image (AMI) instance:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) Management Console
  • ElasticFox (a Mozilla Firefox extension for Amazon EC2)
  • Amazon EC2 command line API tools

This tutorial shows you how to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Management Console to launch an instance of IDS AMI Developer Edition, one of the IBM Development AMIs offered free of charge. IBM currently offers two free AMIs in Amazon EC2 for two different versions of IDS Developer Edition:

  • AMI ami-0fee0966, IBM_IDS_Developer_11.5_v122_12, for IDS DE v11.50.xC3
  • AMI ami-2443a14d, ibm-ids-developer-11.5-v202-1, for IDS DE v11.50.xC5

More details about the AMI ibm-ids-developer-11.5-v202-1 can be found at the Amazon Web services development community AMIs page (see Resources).

Figure 1 shows the general steps required to launch, configure, and use an IDS AMI instance with AWS Management Console:

  1. Sign up for Amazon EC2 Web services
  2. Log on AWS Console
  3. Find IDS AMI
  4. Launch instance of the selected AMI
  5. Administer and use your instances
