Before you start
This series is for novices who want high-level overviews of IBM software products. The modules are designed to introduce the products and draw your interest for further exploration. The exercises only cover the basic concepts, but are enough to get you started.
This tutorial provides an introduction to WebSphere Federation Server. You will learn about the features and capabilities of this product by using it with two hands-on exercises, which are accompanied by demos.
In the first exercise, you create a police report system persisted in XML format, and a DB2 database to store customer data on automobile insurance. In the second exercise, you create a Microsoft Excel document to store customer data on home insurance. You will use WebSphere Federation Server to create data federation among the local database and the two other data sources.
After completing this tutorial, you should understand the basic functions of WebSphere Federation Server, and understand how to use it to create a federated system.
Familiarity with WebSphere Federation Server is not required.
To run the examples in this tutorial, you need to install DB2 Universal Database and WebSphere Federation Server. This tutorial is based on version 9.1 of both products.
To view the demos included in this tutorial, you should have Java™Script enabled in your browser, and Macromedia Flash Player version 6 or later installed. You can download the latest Flash Player at http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer/
