This tutorial includes complete documentation required to successfully deploy five web services to a WebSphere Application Server. A client application is also provided to demonstrate these Web services in action. The DB2 XML Extender's dynamic XML mapping capabilities are demonstrated in this tutorial.

The IBM Video Central tutorial is a complete working application, including a step-by-step guide, to demonstrate DB2 as a Web service provider. This new version uses WebSphere Studio and Application Server V4, and is available for Linux and Windows platforms.

Web services are based on emerging technologies including: SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a standard message format used to invoke Web services. This tutorial transports SOAP messages using the Internet standard protocol, HTTP. Web service requestors can be developed using the Web service provider's WSDL (Web Services Description Language) document.

About the tutorial

This tutorial includes complete documentation required to successfully deploy five web services to a WebSphere Application Server. A client application is also provided to demonstrate these Web services in action. The DB2 XML Extender's dynamic XML mapping capabilities are demonstrated in this tutorial.

The IBM Video Central application is a three tier application:

  1. Web Interface Layer
  2. Business Logic Layer
  3. Data Access Layer.

The Web Interface Layer for IBM Video Central is implemented by utilizing the SOAP runtime provided in WebSphere Application Server v4.0x for Web service invocation.

The Business Logic Layer is implemented using JavaBeans and the interface is described using WSDL. The WSDL interface can be published to a public or private UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration) registry.

The Data Access Layer is implemented using IBM's Data Access Bean technology (based on JDBC). Standard features of WebSphere Application Server including database connection pooling are used to provide efficient resource usage.

System requirements

IBM Video Central runs on Linux, Windows 2000 and Windows NT.
