Introduction

If the IBM Cognos Planning 8.4 Gateway Server is secured with SSL a client only computer cannot automatically download and install the rich client when the default settings are applied.

This document describes how to enable the automatic download of the rich client while using the SSL layer.

The instructions are for Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7.

Disclaimer

Any updates that need to be applied must be copied to the directories described below. For example, a service pack install would not update the copy/pasted directories; therefore, it would be the responsibility of the administrator to copy/paste the updated folders to the required location.

Steps to Enable Non-Secure location

It is possible to copy the installs and updates to a non-secure location and to point the installs to this new location. In the example shown below the installs are copied to directories on the same server, though the directories and the virtual directories could be from another installation on a different unsecured server.

Copy the directory <install_location>\cognos\c8\webcontent\rcp_installs to another location on the server.

Configure IIS

In Internet Information Server (IIS), create a virtual directory pointing to this new directory.

Highlight the rcp_installs file in IIS

Provide read permissions to the directory.

Modify the epRemotecaller.js

Open <install_location>\cognos\c8\webcontent\contributor\epRemotecaller.js in your favorite text editor.

You may need to change the properties for the JS file from read-only.

Edit the file following the screen capture directions and ensure it points to the locations of the virtual directories you have just created. By default the value will equal null. Save your changes.

Open epRemoteCaller.js file in notepad

Perform the Rich Client Install

From the client-only computer browse to the URL for the secure server, for example -
https://computername/cognos8

Select a IBM Cognos 8 Planning package and open with Contributor.

Select an e.list item. You will be prompted to install the IBM Cognos 8 Planning 8.4 client framework. Click Install Now.
