Recognizing developerWorks Contributing Author: Serge Rielau
Serge's focus areas include SQL compiler technology and competitive migrations from Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server to DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (LUW). Serge joined the IBM Canada Lab - Toronto Site in 1998 after a year at the Almaden Research Lab, where he got started with DB2. Over the years, as a team lead and first-line manager, he worked on the DB2 LUW SQL front-end compiler, implementing various DB2 features such as "generated columns" and what's come to be known as the "new SQL," which enables people to select from insert, update and delete operations. He is now leading the DB2 push to become Oracle compatible. He has helped convert numerous independent software vendors and customers from Oracle and SQL servers to DB2. He has presented or placed papers at the International Conference for Very Large Databases (VLDB), the Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD), the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT), the International DB2 User Group Conference (IDUG), and the IBM conferences CASCON, IM Tech, and Information on Demand (IOD).
