Summary:  Data warehouse environments continue to experience an explosion in data growth. As a result, you might find yourself in a situation where you need added capacity to cope with increased enterprise demands. To help you meet these demands, the IBM Smart Analytics System is a flexible data warehousing solution that supports a building block approach to expansion. This document discusses how to identify, plan and prepare for an expansion of your system and discusses the milestones and options involved in an expansion project.

The IBM Smart Analytics System can be expanded to accommodate growth in users and data, providing a scalable and flexible approach to data warehousing infrastructure needs.

This article provides details on the following recommendations:

  • Good capacity planning practices can assist in early detection of trends in resource usage. You can create and document a performance baseline for each workload and a forecast baseline for the next 12 months. Align your service level objectives with capacity planning indicators so that metrics can be easily compared.
  • Begin planning for storage expansion when storage capacity reaches 60% and is projected to reach 80% within 12 months.
  • You can add a data module to expand storage capacity and reduce the data volume per database partition. Or, you can add a user module to increase the capacity of the system to accommodate users. When adding modules, remember that multi-generation environments might need multiple high availability groups. Ensure that you incorporate fail over and fail back testing into your expansion plan.

There are other, more general recommendations that apply as well. When planning an expansion, do not forget to include site preparation. Additional cooling, floor space, and network capacity might be needed to accommodate an expanded system.

You also need to take into account the operational implications of your expanded system. Review your backup and recovery infrastructure to ensure that you can maintain service level objectives after the expansion. Also, ETL applications and maintenance scripts need to be reviewed to accommodate the expanded system.
