Before you start
Virtual system patterns are system topology patterns that can be built with the virtual images that are included in the Workload Deployer catalog. In the context of the Workload Service, the Workload Deployer catalog essentially includes a selected set of virtual images from the SmartCloud image catalog. These virtual images can be assembled together to form a virtual system pattern. Furthermore, virtual image parts may be customized via script packages.
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to hook up your virtual systems to your shared monitoring server.
Prerequisites and system requirements
This tutorial assumes that you are entitled to the IBM SmartCloud Application Services family of offerings. In particular, you must have a dedicated instance of the Workload Service, and you need some familiarity with virtual system patterns.
You need to have an IBM Tivoli Monitoring Server set up on the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise. There is a pre-release version of Tivoli Monitoring V6.2.2.1 on SmartCloud. Create a dedicated instance of this server by logging into the IBM SmartCloud portal and selecting the circled image from the Add Instance window as shown in Figure 1.

Think of this Tivoli Monitoring Server as a shared server that can monitor a number of your virtual systems. Once an instance of the Tivoli Monitoring Server is provisioned, note the IP address of the Tivoli Monitoring instance, and access the Tivoli Enterprise Portal at this url: http://<YOUR_ITM_IP>:1920///cnp/kdh/lib/cnp.html.
This tutorial uses script packages to customize IBM Workload Deloyer virtual images so that instances of virtual images can be monitored by your Tivoli Monitoring server in an automated and repeatable manner. The four steps shown in Figure 2 are used to achieve virtual systems monitoring.
