    Heroes big and small

As I head home today after the big Rational conference, I think back on a busy and productive week. I had a chance to interview quite a few thought leaders and technical experts for dW podcasts. I also enjoyed seeing customers and colleagues, new and old -- including a brand new member of the developerWorks team, market manager Vikram Gulati. I was pleased also to finally meet in person the director of developerWorks, Stephanie Martin (who took the reigns of dW last year).

Unlike me, my wife was not so pleased. Joann wanted to join me so she could see "Denny Crane" in person. Alas, she instead heroically stayed home to care for our son, who's nearly 4 months old. I'm not sure how much she would've enjoyed William Shatner's comparison of movie business and software business, though, given that she has no interest in software development and delivery. The RSDC crowd, however, responded well: Many gave Shatner a standing ovation! Apparently he (and/or Captain Kirk) is a hero.

While family could not join me this year, I did try to bring baby boy Kelton along, in spirit at least, via this photo:

    Little R-Hero Kelton

Nice pose, eh? (Thanks to dW's own Victoria Ovens for providing the "R" to help transform a "little hero" shirt into a "little R-hero" shirt to embrace the 2008 RSDC theme.) If Kelton could talk, he'd probably have a slightly different mantra ... not quite "RU ready to save the day?" ... but perhaps "RU ready to change my diaper?" Then again, from his perspective, diaper-changing may seem heroic -- a "save the day" feat. Heh.

Anyhow, I hope you all have heroes in your lives, big and little, R- and otherwise, and that you heed Grady Booch's challenge to be a hero to others.

    a circus of Rational treats

    Howdy ho,
It's hard to catch your intellectual and nocturnal breath here. So many formal talks of great quality and variety. So many coolio peeps to meet; or - even better- see again from previous RSDCs. Fun events. Dinners with paid-for drinking with colleagues. Yikes. No wonder I last wrote two days ago. No way I can catch up. Blog or sleep wise.

One unexpected highlight for me so far is fully embracing Rat Team Concert, RTC. A nicely organized "Jazz Café" was set up onsite to help get the Jazz and RTC code installed on laptops. I popped in and am now enabled. So when I leave RSDC, I can easily play-away-RTC-style. In fact, being an IBMer and having free access to the product, I'm already thinking about a real-world mini project I can run to familiarize myself with RTC and solve a pressing problem.

The really cool thing is that behind the RTC bytes is an active community that has the full involvement of the relevant IBM Rational folk, particularly the development and product management team members. So customers can get much more under the sheets (can I say that on a blue-washed IBM corporate site?) with the product development process. Open source style, transparent, with clear project governance bylaws, applying the best lessons from Eclipse and Jazz development. Anyways, I have now officially drunk the Jazz and RTC kool-aide and finally understand the vision that excited smarter people a year ago. Better late than never for me. That is my so far best unexpected takeaway.
Yours, Marc, Rational dW Online Community Manager

    Customer feedback on developerWorks

Just a quick note to let the rest of the developerWorks team and our customers know what a great service our site it providing.

While having breakfast before the opening session this morning (if you missed it be sure to catch the replay of William Shatner's talk), I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of IBM customers who use developerWorks quite often, here are some quotes:

"I can always find what I am looking for on developerWorks."

"IBM should invest more money in developerWorks. It would be an investment in all of the ClearQuest and ClearCase admins that use the site."

"developerWorks is IBM's best kept secret."

"Instructors should spend 10 minutes at the start of their classes, letting their students know of all the great resources on the site."

"When a new ClearCase admin joins one of our projects, the first thing I do is point them to developerWorks to quickly get them up to speed."

"ClearQuest admins are often isolated, developerWorks is the best place for them to go and ask questions and find answers."

There were also suggestions to improve search and to allow user defined categories within the forums.

It is this type of face-to-face interaction with customers and positive feedback that helps keep me going. Thank you to all of our customers for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

    My heros

I knew my Tuesday was going to be a long day .. I only live 15 minutes down the road .. but I needed to leave the house early for the opening session and I knew I would not be back to well after 8pm tonight ... but my children helped put everything in perspective this morning by suggesting that they go to work for me, while I go to school for them :-)

My heroes - IBM’s future heroes:

Swing by ped #64, say "hi" (to me, my kids ended up going to school this morning) and learn more about developerWorks and the Rational RFE Community where you can submit and track RFE online.
