Increased Memory Requirements for VIOS 2.1 and LHEA
Using NIM to install VIOS 2.1
The install may hang with after the message: "Mounting File Systems"
Why? VIOS 2.1 requires more than 1GB of memory typical for VIOS 1.5
From the Release Notes:
Each LHEA port assigned to the VIO Server requires a minimum of 612MB (not a typo) of memory - each port. This is in addition to the base memory that VIOS 2.1 itself requires (typically 512MB).
Example:
If you have two [2] LHEAs assigned to VIOS 2.1, the VIOS will need a minimum of:
612 MB 612 MB 512 MB = 1,736MB
(LHEA) (LHEA) (Base) = Minimum RAM

New "svmon" option for Available Memory
This is a new feature of starting with AIX 5.3 TL9 and AIX 6.1 TL2.
svmon will now report a new metric called “available memory.“ This is the amount of memory available to applications. It includes memory in the file cache. The basic idea is that a user can consume the “available memory“ without causing the system to start paging to paging space. Once “available memory” is depleted, AIX will have to start paging out to paging space.
To get svmon to display the available metric, you can specify the ''-O summary=basic" option. There are a number of new options to svmon in AIX 6.1 TL2. Here's an example that shows the output with the "summary=basic" option and the "unit=auto" option (which causes svmon to display memory stats in bytes):
# svmon -O summary=basic,unit=auto
Unit: auto
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
size inuse free pin virtual available
memory 1.00G 631.20M 392.80M 266.27M 514.46M 465.14M
pg space 512.00M 6.56M
work pers clnt other
pin 223.02M 0K 0K 43.3M
in use 514.46M 88K 116.66M
This is currently available to ISVs via the vmgetinfo() API on both AIX 5.3 and 6.1. It has not yet been added to a perfstat API, but it should be added in the future.

Samba for AIX
Samba is an open source, free software suite that provides seamless file and print services between Windows® clients and UNIX®-like platforms. It can be run on a UNIX-like platform like AIX®, BSD® UNIX, Linux®, IBM® 390 and OpenVMS. Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol that is installed in the host server. When configured, this server software allows the host machine to share files and printers and make them accessible from Windows clients.

Potential AIX Daylight Saving Time Problem
There is a potential problem with AIX display of local time which might occur around the transition to standard time this coming weekend.
If the problem occurs, in most cases the only impact is that AIX displays local time incorrectly for a day or so around the transition to or from daylight savings time. AIX displays standard time when it should display daylight savings time or vice versa. Of course, while local time is being displayed incorrectly, if some local time is provided to an application (eg, changing the AIX system clock, specifying to NetBackup the point in time target for a restore, etc) then the application is likely to use a time which is different than the user intended.
The impact on SAP is more severe because SAP periodically checks to confirm that AIX agrees with it regarding the local time. SAP halts the data base if there is any discrepancy! SAP ZDATE_LARGE_TIME_DIFF errors will be found in SAP's logs if this occurs. SAP Note #1266144 has more information.
IBM published a High Impact/Highly Pervasive bulletin back in June, which was misleading because it said, "Date output for the AST/ADT time zones is incorrect." The problem can affect time zones other than AST/ADT. A new bulletin was published today attempting to clarify the nature of the issue. The new bulletin is published on the Bulletins for System p web site (at http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/subscriptions/pqvcmjd). Once browsing the web page, choose Heading: AIX 5L Version 5.3, Topic: High impact, and Month: October 2008. In the bulletin list which appears, click on the bulletin dated 2008.10.28.
A System p server with the AIX TZ environment variable set to any time zone is potentially exposed to the problem, although the consensus within IBM is that as long as TZ is not set in a way which overrides daylight savings time defaults, no problem will occur. It is not possible to override the DST defaults when the TZ environment variable is set (in /etc/environment) using the smit menus. And since the AIX DST defaults are set to United States DST conventions, most users in the US will not override the defaults and so will not be affected this coming weekend, although it is best to apply the fix identified in the bulletin to be absolutely certain. See the Managing the Time Zone Variable Technote (at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=111&uid=isg3T1000252) for more information on overriding DST default values.
To subscribe to AIX bulletins which are published in the future, please point a browser at the My notifications for IBM technical support web page (at https://www.ibm.com/systems/support/myview/subscription/css.wss/folders?methodName=listMyFolders).

Remote Access Control for New Users on HMC 7.3.3.0.1
As of Service Pack 1 of HMC V7R3.3, there's a new access control that must be considered when creating new users. By default, remote access is not allowed, even if in general you've already allowed remote users.
The box to check if you want to allow remote access is found under User Properties in the task used to create or modify a user's account. When creating a user account, remember to click on User Properties at the bottom of the task menu. In the lower left corner of the menu that comes up next you'll find a check box that says Allow Remote Access via the Web. By default, it's unchecked, so be sure to change the value if this user will access the HMC over the web.
There are some other settings you can select on this same menu: session timeout minutes (default 0), verify timeout minutes (default 15), idle timeout minutes (default 0), and minimum time in minutes between password changes (default 0). You can also select an option to disable the account for inactivity in a certain number of days (default 0), or never disable for inactivity.

HMC Version 7 and Your Browser of Choice
The documentation for HMC Version 7 says that the web browsers supported are Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and later, as well as Firefox 1.5.0.6 and later. While many users have no trouble with Internet Explorer 7.0, others have reported problems. What makes the difference? Sometimes its Java code, and sometimes its the browser settings.
For example, a customer recently reported trouble with IE 7 after he updated Java to jre 1.6.0_05 from jre 1.6.0_03. Previously, IE 7 had worked fine.
IBM support usually will make a best-effort attempt to resolve your browser compatibility problems. But in the case above, the problem wasn't the HMC code or even IE 7 itself, since it had worked with an earlier level of Java. By being conservative in upgrading browser and Java code, you may avoid slipping into an unsupported condition.
What are the requirements for browser support?
1. HTML 2.0, JavaScript 1.0, Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and support for cookies. (If necessary, contact support personnel to see if your browser is configured for a Java Virtual Machine.)
2. The browser must use HTTP 1.1 protocol; if a proxy server is used, HTTP 1.1 must be enabled for the proxy server. (In Internet Explorer, see the Advanced tab under Internet Options)
3. For Firefox 2.0, make sure the JavaScript option to raise or lower windows and move or resize existing windows is enabled. To enable this option, go to the Content tab in the browser’s Options dialog, click Advanced... next to the Enable JavaScript option, then select Raise or lower windows and Move or resize existing windows options, then click OK to enable. These features allow you to switch easily between HMC tasks and to resize the task window.

Ordering the Correct HMC Model
Be sure you order the correct Hardware Management Console to match the code you plan to run.
The 7042 machine type is for HMCs running Version 7. This Licensed Internal Code is a requirement for managing POWER6 servers, such as the 9117-MMA. However, it will also support POWER5 and POWER5+ managed servers.
The 7310 machine type is for HMCs running Version 6. You cannot manage a POWER6 server using this HMC code. It is for POWER5 and POWER5+ managed servers only.
Many 7310 HMCs can be upgraded in the field to support HMC V7 Release 3 code. However, the reverse is not true. IBM does not support changing a 7042 HMC to support HMC V6 Licensed Internal Code. Attempting to load HMC V6 LIC on a 7042 will produce an error message and the installation will be blocked.
In current models, the only difference between the two machines is a feature code that specifies which code to install. The hardware is identical. Feature code #0961 drives shipment of HMC Version 6 with the HMC. Feature code #0962 drives shipment of HMC Version 7.
To avoid delays, be sure you know which HMC code environment you want before ordering your HMC.
