XML is Ten Years Old
As many prominent bloggers have mentioned in the past few days, it is now 10 years since the initial XML Recommendation was published by the W3C back on February 10th 1998. This fairly simple markup technology has touched so many of our professional lives during the past 10 years. Congratulations to the entire XML community that has driven it's evolution from 1998 to the present day.

SHARE in Orlando
The next SHARE conference is coming up soon in Orlando (February 24th - 29th). As many of you will know from my prior posts I help run the SOA Project at SHARE and my focus is on finding great speakers to talk on a number of topics related to things like SOA, Web 2.0, emerging technology and emerging standards. I usually give a few talks myself. Sadly this year due to my ongoing medical issues I will not be attending but a number of my colleagues will be there and we have a great agenda in place both for the SOA project and for the conference as a whole. If you are not already signed up but happen to be in the Orlando area that week feel free to come on over to the Disney Coronado Springs Resort and join in the fun.

I've temporarily disabled comments
Sadly, this blog (among others) has been repeatedly and aggressively attacked by spammers recently. Despite the many filters in place to prevent this many what I consider extremely rude and offensive comments have been making it through. I have asked my webmaster to (at least for now) disable comments and help me clean up the spam. It's sad that such a useful interaction tool has to be crippled due to what basically amounts to mindless on-line vandalism. I will continue to try and post items here that are of interest. In lieu of the comment facility being available , if you have feedback for me on any of my postings please send me e-mail and I promise to read it. Sorry for the inconvenience but I feel I have no choice.

More social networking == more spam?
It could be me, but since my recent decision to get more active on many "social networking" oriented web sites that the volume of spam to the e-mail accounts that I let those sites know about has massively increased. I could be wrong about this and it could just be coincidence but somehow I don't think it is. Are others seeing the same phenomena?

Catching up on my social networking
While I am a big "live on the web" type of person, and by that I mean that more and more I spend most of my "computer time" using web based tools, with the exception of my personal web page and the other blogs that I post to I have been somewhat behind in diving in to some of the newer "social networking" technologies. I have for some time had a stack of invites from friends and colleagues to join them at sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn that I have never got around to processing. This week I finally got all of the Facebook requests processed (and I even sent out several invites of my own) and I am working through the LinkedIn requests now. If you have sent me a request in the past few weeks I appreciate your patience. I am still not 100% sold on the value of every one of the social networking tools that I have played with, and I actually expect some sort of normalizing of the choices available (along the lines of "survival of the fittest") to take place over the coming months, but for now I have decided to make an effort and see if these tools prove useful to me or more just another way to "spend time and have fun" while on-line.
As this is my first post here in 2008 I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New year. I for one hope that 2008 is a little less eventful than 2007 was for me personally.

Sorry for the silence
I have not posted here for a while due mainly to my ongoing focus on my medical issues that I mentioned in my October 10th posting. I have been managing to keep my family website up to date with the medical news but I have not managed to keep up here. My goal is to get active again talking about technology on this blog in the new year. I have been experimenting with a lot of cool web technology and also I bought myself a Mac Book Pro to play with (I have never owned a Mac before). I'll try and post a few times in the not too distant future on how the Mac is working out for me - so far I am very impressed.
In the meantime, thanks to everyone who has written to me asking if I nm ok (given the silence here). I'm hanging in there pretty well.
I'd like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season and all the best for 2008
- Kelvin

Colorado Software Summit
In a few days time (October 21st) it will be time for the 2007 Colorado Software Summit . I missed the 2006 event and so was very much looking forward to this year's conference. I had in fact planned to drive up there with the kids so they could see some different weather from the 90 plus degrees Fahrenheit we have had here in Texas the last many weeks (it's about 1000 miles from Austin by car). Sadly due to some sudden and unexpected health issues (that will be the topic of a separate post later this week) I am not going to be able to attend. This is a real downer for sure. Once again the agenda looks outstanding and the collection of speakers looks first class (as I am sure the attendees will be - they always are). This is my favorite event of the year as it's not just a conference but it's a chance for talented people with all kinds of backgrounds to get together in an informal and yet well organized way and share new and exciting ideas about internet and related technology. If you have never been to one of these - do something about that!
To Wayne and Peggy Kovsky who run the conference and my many friends that I look forward to (re)meeting there each year, I shall miss you all. Have a great week and please post photos to the web so those of us that wish we were there (but cannot be) can see what we are missing.

Lotus Symphony download available now
I have been meaning for a couple of days to post here with a pointer to the recently announced (publicly available, free download) of the Lotus Symphony beta release. Symphony provides applications for the creation and manipulation of documents, presentations and spreadsheets and supports the Open Document Format (ODF) . There are also import filters for many other formats. It is supported on both Windows (XP and Vista) and on Linux. I downloaded the code last night and have been playing with it today. All of my existing ODF format documents seem to work just fine and I was very pleased to see the broad selections of presentation templates that get installed as part of the package. Congratulations to my Lotus colleagues who worked so hard to deliver these productivity applications.

Robert Jordan
I read with great sadness today, that James Oliver Rigney, Jr. (known to most of us by his pen name of Robert Jordan), author of the extremely popular Wheel of Time series of books has died. He had been fighting illness for some time and I had been following his blog and always hoping for good news. Sadly today the news is that he has lost his battle.
His books have kept me company on many a long plane ride and I have met many others while traveling who were also carrying copies of his books.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

WS-Policy 1.5 is a W3C Recommendation
It's been a very busy Summer with lots of family activities outside of work and consequently I have not blogged for a while. Now that the kids are back at school and I am back at work full time after taking a much needed vacation, I plan to try and get caught up with my blogging.
It's nice to be able to get back into the swing of things with some good news. As Chris Ferris just posted on his blog, the WS-Policy 1.5 Specification has just become a W3C Recommendation. This is a key web services specification that a lot of people have contributed to and a lot of people have been looking forward to seeing standardized.
My congratulations to all involved.

Where is XML going?
Kurt Cagle has posted an interesting piece called "Where's XML going?" on his blog that takes a look at the many uses of XML and summarizes his view of where XML stands in its evolution. If you are interested in XML, it's current uses, and the many important standards that have been built upon it I recommend taking a look.

Interoperability Specifications Pledge
In case you missed the press and blog coverage, yesterday there was an important announcement from IBM of a broad patent pledge that covers over 150 of the core interoperability standards.
Bob Sutor has a nice writeup summarizing the announcement on his blog.
The official press release is here.
I believe this is very important progress in making things ever more consistent and simple with regard to encouraging broad adoption of key industry standards.

WS-SecurityPolicy is an OASIS Standard
I am a few days late posting this due to business travel and the 4th of July holiday in the United States this week but I wanted to post here that WS-SecurityPolicy is now an OASIS Standard. You can read the OASIS announcement for additional details.
WS-SecurityPolicy is the third of three key Web Services specifications that the Web Services Secure Exchange (WSSX) Technical Committee has produced and taken to OASIS Standard. The other two being WS-Trust and WS-SecureConversation.
The WS-SecurityPolicy spec defines a framework for allowing web
services to express their constraints and requirements (in terms of
security). The advancement of this spec to OASIS Standard marks another
key piece of the Web Services Security Roadmap falling into place.
You can find the specs in various formats by following the links in the OASIS announcement but for simplicity here is a pointer to the PDF version of the spec.
My congratulations to the members of the WSSX TC for this very significant achievement.
