Get concise tips for solving challenges to using autonomic computing technologies. See how version control can cause problems with installing the Integrated Solutions Console and how error log files can be your best friend.

Solutions in action is a series of concise tips for solving challenges to using autonomic computing technologies. This is an informal series, with many of the issues and answers gleaned from technology chat rooms and forums, so the actual problems and solutions may not work for your particular situation -- the main benefit of this series is to provide insight into how various autonomic computing technologies work, to help you "think" in a direction that can solve your individual challenge.

This example is from the Integrated Solutions Console support forum and the user is trying to install the Integrated Solutions Console, but is having some difficulty.

My ISC 6.0 won't install

Problem win2003 sever & ISC installation

Hi,

I want to install Tivoli[®] Storage Manager on a Windows[®] 2003 server and I have a problem installing ISC [Integrated Solutions Console] 6.0 . After downloading the packets from the Web, I have installed jre (Java[™] virtual machine), then I have installed the WebSphere[®] Community Edition and after that, I've run the executable that contains the ISC. It copies some folders to my pc (Portal server, Appserver, tutorial, patch, fixup ...) and an executable, setupISC.exe. I run it and when the installation is close to finishing (about 92 percent), it crashes. I know that I have to instruct the installation wizard that the path where I want to install the ISC has to be sorted (I've read it on Google), so I decided to install in c:\ibm\ISC. The log error is this:

install, ACProductAction, err, ProductException: (erro code = 9;
 message="Error during the Integrated solution Runtime installation.
 See c:documents and settings\....\ISCRuntimeInstall.log for details.")

And at the end of the log it says:

Setup.product.install, com.ibm.isc.install.ismp.FailandExitAction,wrn,
 ISCArchiveFixupFail_Exit
Setup.product.install, com.ibm.isc.install.ismp.FailandExitAction,wrn,
Setup.product.install, com.ibm.isc.install.ismp.FailandExitAction,msg2,
 status=FAILED; timestamp=TUES.....,   progress=(uncghanged)

I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what to do to fix it. Maybe the problem is because I have not installed the correct WebSphere edition? What else should I install for the ISC?

Sorry, we support only the ISC [that] was downloaded off the AC Toolkit developerWorks [Web site]. However, we will give you the following recommendations.

The Java we usually test with is 1.4.2. A newer version of Java could create problems. ISC doesn't have any dependency on the WebSphere Application Server; it comes with its own embedded version. It is highly recommended to temporarily shut down the firewall during installation. Also make sure you have admin rights. Most of the times ISC installation problems go away by itself, if you clean up, restart the machine, and try once more.

I just tried to install the ISC, but it didn't work. I downloaded it from:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/isc/v5r3

Is that wrong? (I got a file called TSM_ISC_5320_WIN.exe ~300 MB)

What is "AC Toolkit developerWorks [Web site]"? What about Passport Advantage; we have a "Passport Advantage."

The ISC installation logs are created in the %temp% folder. It should explain why it failed. The main log is the ISCRuntimeInstall.log.

ISC is shipped with different IBM products and I assume you are installing the one which is part of TSM. You can post your TSM related queries here:

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/tivoli_forums.jsp

The AC Toolkit is the IBM Autonomic Computing Toolkit [Web site]. Read all about the Integrated Solutions Console here. The version of ISC we have is v6.0.1 and is for demonstrating the AC Problem Determination scenario.

Disclaimers and acknowledgements

Because some tips in this series are not tested, some of the technologies are offered on an experimental basis, and because your situation may differ from the one in the article, IBM does not endorse these solutions and will not be held responsible for any damages that may occur in the employment of these solutions.

We'd like to thank vpuente, KCBHL, and actk.support.

Also, start looking for our new tip series for the Build to Manage Toolkit for Problem Determination (which has encompassed much of the Autonomic Computing Toolkit). Coming soon.
