How to submit content for publication on developerWorks

The editors at developerWorks seek technical content focused on:

  • Ways to serve the wants and needs of software developers
  • Open-standards technologies as well as specific IBM products
  • Practical solutions, and lessons learned
  • Working code (programs, components, code samples)
  • How-to tips and techniques ranging from introductory to advanced

Find more specifics in each developerWorks editor's content wish list.

If you've got an idea for a technical article or tutorial, the fastest route to its publication on developerWorks is:

  1. Submit your idea using our Content submission form.

Note: Authors residing in China, India, Japan, Korea, and Russia may submit content directly to local editors for review.

  2. We'll review your idea and get back in touch with you.

  3. If you get the go-ahead on your idea from a developerWorks editor, our step-by-step instructions will help you compose your article or tutorial: Using our templates, illustration tips, and accessibility advice will speed up the publication of your article or tutorial.

  4. A developerWorks editor will work with you on scheduling and refining your content for publication. We offer competitive rates for author compensation.

Authors residing in China, India, Japan, Korea, or Russia whose content is published on the developerWorks site for their respective country are compensated according to that country's local standards (for details, contact the editor-in-chief for the respective country).

IBMers who write for developerWorks may receive an award, but these awards are not automatic. Factors that help determine if an award is given include topic, relevance, and type of content. Once your submission is accepted, an editor will discuss with you whether your content is eligible for a developerWorks publication award.

Author Achievement Recognition Program

The IBM developerWorks Author Achievement Recognition Program is a merit program that formally acknowledges the publishing achievements of developerWorks contributors. Participants earn points for contributions and work toward the following levels of achievement:

  • Contributing author: An IBM developerWorks Contributing Author is a multiple contributor to developerWorks who has independently authored at least one major content item.

  • Professional author: An IBM developerWorks Professional Author is a frequent developerWorks contributor who is also an active technical reviewer, and a mentor to aspiring developerWorks authors.

  • Master author: An IBM developerWorks Master Author is an authoritative technical contributor who has demonstrated the highest level of integrity and commitment to sharing technical knowledge.

If you are a current or recent author, past contributions to developerWorks may be applied to program requirements, if eligible. Read the program details to learn how the program works and how you can take advantage of it.

Our editorial policy

The developerWorks Web site publishes technology-oriented content driven by the wants and needs of developers. Our audience is the entire community of software developers -- not just current IBM customers and partners. developerWorks focuses on those developers who are committed to using and advancing open, standards-based, cross-platform technologies and strategies.

We publish: How-to articles, tutorials, tips, code, news items, forums, wikis, spaces, and blogs dedicated to serving your wants and needs as a developer. We emphasize relevant information that helps you perform your daily tasks and helps you maintain and improve your skills. Our content helps you cut through the information clutter to do your job more easily and effectively. Our content integrates cutting-edge technologies that you can access, evaluate, and learn from.

We do not publish: Non-technical information (sales brochures, customer-focused case studies, customer testimonials) or news items, tutorials, and how-tos that are not broadly relevant to our developer audience.

Reprinting our published content on other sites: IBM retains the copyright for developerWorks content. Reprints without explicit written permission from IBM or the original author are prohibited. If you wish to reprint our content, please contact our Editor-in-Chief, Michael O'Connell, at moc@us.ibm.com.
